After many requests, I've put together a suggested reading list that covers my particular passions (liberty, knowledge, and self-defense). Enjoy!!

A quick note to remind people that are looking to tackle their 2011 New Year's Resolutions that fitness is usually at the top of the list. Two things that I do that might help are below:

Swing the Macebell!

See a hypnotist!

Hope you enjoy,

~Jake

If you ever plan on doing something great you have to expect critics (whether their criticism is justified, or if you are being honest and kind, if their criticism is inspired by envy, insecurity, or just plain ugliness) so start developing your thick-skin now.

In fact, I haven't been able to find one successful person that hasn't had smears leveled against them, remember that! In fact, sometimes the smears helped launch people's success (since most people that have their attention called to a person will make up their own minds. Just look at someone like Howard Stern, whom it seems the phrase "there ain't no such thing as bad publicity" was written about!)

I recently had some friends on my facebook page (here's another "Jake Shannon" facebook page of mine too) share some great quotes for those of you who still worry about "haters" as a follow up to my original article about those who only offer name-calling, smears, and ugliness :
"Robustness is when you care more about the few who like your work than the multitude who hates it (artists); fragility is when you care more about the few who hate your work than the multitude who loves it (politicians)." ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
“Focus on impact, not approval. If you believe you can change the world, which I hope you do, do what you believe is right and expect resistance and expect attackers” ~ Tim Ferris
"Seek not the favor of the multitude... But seek the testimony of the few; and number not the voices, but weigh them." ~ Immanuel Kant

It certainly interesting running for public office, I'd recommend that EVERY American do it at least once so they can get a close-up view of the sausage factory in action.

Anyway, the great thing about running as a third party candidate is that you are unlikely to win a major office (unless you have some sort of serious bankroll like Ross Perot or celebrity status like a Jesse Ventura). However you get the chance to change the debate and bring up topics that may be taboo to the establishment politicians.

I ran for the third U.S. congressional district seat in the state of Utah. Here are some nice articles from local media from that time:

Hypno-Candidate: Libertarian candidate searches for true conservatism in the 3rd Congressional District.

Jake Shannon: Libertarian Congressional Hypnotist

The World’s Most Dangerous Hypnotist: Libertarian Candidate for the House, Jake Shannon

I even received some really great endorsements:

"It gives me great pleasure to endorse Jake Shannon for congress in the Utah Third Congressional seat. Jake Shannon is exactly what we need
to rid our country of complacency and the political correctness that is
destroying our nation."
-Sheriff Richard Mack

"If you like Ron Paul, you are sure to like Jake Shannon. Like Ron Paul, Jake is a dedicated defender of liberty and constitutional government. In these days of government spending gone wild, we need Jake Shannon in Congress. I urge everyone to support his campaign."
-David Gordon, PhD.
Editor, The Mises Review

"America's problems can be summed up in two words: big government. American needs people like Jake Shannon who will fight against big government, and fight for individual liberty and free markets."
-Glenn Jacobs
(aka the WWE's Kane)

And here is my Campaign for Liberty candidate survey. Special thanks to everyone that helped, including Gigi Bowman at Liberty-Candidates.org, Sondra Shannon, Tyler Needham, Tiffany Blair, Brad Blackham, Rebekah Jakobi-Whyte, the Voodoo Darlings, the LPUtah.org and KUED!
